When I first discovered Street Artist Banksy in 2002, I was a graffiti artist myself. I spent an awful long time on his website in awe studying the images, and his little blurbs next to them. I was convinced that he would change the Street art world as we knew it, and I wrote an email to him to tell him so. I said something along the lines of “being the next warhol, picasso, great artist of our time. Finally somebody will change the way we look at things, and make people think again.”. I got a reply from banksy the next day saying ” Cheers mate”. I wish to this day I kept it.
For the past few years photographers and journalists have teamed up to uncover him at events in Jamaica, and now in London, etc. The media and public praises everything he represents, but at the same time wants to ruin what he’s offered us because its supposed to be wrong. Has any other artist ( or politician rather) gone to the lengths Bansky has, in order to bring real issues to your face? Nope. he’s the one to spark it all, he’s the one that reminded you of all the issues we face everyday, and probably brought new ones to you as well. And he reminds us of the changes we need to make. He’s a genius, and I dont take that word lightly.
World Media, do you really want to stop what is so good to our well being as a whole, as humans? Yes its vandalism, yes its destructive at times, yes he sparks more, less talented people to do the same. So what. He has opened the eyes of everyone thats taken the time to read his site, and his book. He’s an incredibly smart, slick individual that is risking himself in order to remind you of what you’ve blocked out of your life. Real issues worldwide, and in your backyard, who’s controlling who, and what the outcome has become.
Leave Banksy alone, and attack the real issues.

Banksy: Thank you for inspiring millions.

Well said Clay – so typical that people are dying to commodify this cat at this point.
Word.
