Yanko Design is holding a design contest my wife will adore. Ive had an idea within this criteria for some time, and I think its about time I execute.

From Yanko:

Design for Poverty International Contest hosted by Yanko Design in collaboration with Blog Action Day. Participation is open to applicants from every country in the world; professionals, students, and design enthusiasts.

Subject matter

Global issues like poverty are extremely complex. There is no simple, clear answer. By asking thousands of different people to give their viewpoints and opinions, Blog Action Day creates an extraordinarily lens through which to view these issues.

Yanko Design wants you to put on your thinking caps and use design to address poverty; a solution or artistic social commentary. We want you to show how the power of design can bring unity and speak up for the hundreds of millions that can’t. We’ve seen wonderful examples of this in the past; portable water bottle filters and lightweight shelter modules to name a few. What can you come up with?

Design criteria

  • Entries must address poverty in terms of a solution OR artistic commentary.
  • Entries must be submitted by individuals or teams.
  • Projects should not already be in production.
  • Previously published or exhibited projects are prohibited.
  • Sketches, renderings, and descriptions are required.

Timelines

  • All submissions must be received by October 10, 2008.
  • 10 finalists will be announced to the world October, 15, 2008 on Blog Action Day.
  • The judges will announce the winners on October 20, 2008 here on Yanko Design.

Judging

Judging is private by select members of Yanko Design spanning many fields of design. Submissions will not be made public until the unveiling of the top 10 finalists. Gold, Silver, and Bronze awards will be given to the top three. Additional honorary awards will be given to select entries.

The judges will award designs and concepts which are innovative in terms of their formal / technological aspects addressing poverty. Both idea and presentation are key so no vague submissions please.

Prizes

There will be prizes thanks to our sponsors but will be kept secret until the winners are announced.

Copyright

By participating in the competition, all participants authorize Yanko Design and Blog Action Day to publish and exhibit all the designs including project data submitted – waiving compensation – at exhibitions and events and/or use them in any publication that the organizers may deem suitable. Yanko Design will not pursue production of any design submitted.

ICENI By Trident

This car is a beauty, a real “looker”. But functionality will prevail, and she has that too.

The Trident Iceni has an engine that runs on pure biodiesel, the Trident Iceni can do 2,000 miles on one tank of fuel – enough for a return trip to Venice from London.

It uses a technology called ‘torque multiplication’ which helps keeps the revs low and thus uses less fuel, giving out less emissions.

The chassis is made from stainless steel which won’t corrode and the body is built of a composite which will never rust or degrade.

Coffee Table Hunt

Ive been searching for a new coffee table to go along with our new couch, which will be delivered in a week and a half, and I stumbled on this.

Now, it doesnt look like much at first, but I found it interesting. Its “collapsable” and is made this way to lower its carbon footprint.

“This coffee table represents the ultimate in versatility and a step towards environmentally conscious design. The amount of energy and pollutants, expended into the environment, required to ship a piece of furniture can easily exceed the energy used to construct it. Since most furniture doesn’t consume energy during use, shipping can be the largest part of its environmental footprint. With this in mind we designed a table base that folds up to 1/20th the size of a conventional coffee table. This equates to more efficient shipping.”

You can assort it in numerous ways, depending on your feelings, room size, etc. Its sold w/o glass ( at only $144) ad I kinda like it… Wish it came in powder coated white, though. below are other ways to assemble the “Turning Point Coffee Table”

get yours at Jet Age Furniture

Then… Theres the laptop coffee table from Dwell

This one is pretty amazing for apartment living, especially My apartment. Again, wish it came in white.

Help!

Help Products is on to something. If youve ever been in the drug store, with a headache searching for that remedy it usually gives you a bit more of a headache. Packages with colors red, yellow, with white and black would only add to the problem, so what Help has done is stripped away the mess, and advertising. Which in 2008 is far more noticeable, and less cluttery in your head.

“We make our signature molded packaging from recycled paper pulp. It’s a very clever material that is both made in part from recycled materials and is compostable. We still have to use some plastic around the pills, but we don’t want to and we are working with the FDA to change this.” – Help products

Steelwool Bicycle Co.

Ever notice that when something is “Canadian made” it’s like an angel getting its wings? The US can make as many gas guzzling muscle cars as they like, and trucks named after sexual experiences is so yesterday ( I’m talking to you, Hummer). Its just when something is manufactured and designed locally, you fall for it.

Ottawa based, Thom Johnson and Will Ficner knew they had something special when they came out with their first Steelwool bicycle. Their intent was to ensure they made the tightest bike around, with the strongest Steel frame, and the best shiniest parts available, but still remain affordable. Once the first Steelwool bike was released, people fell for it.

Now, 2 years later they are taking it to the next level. They make quality road bicycles, but the one that caught my eye in my local shop, was their fixed model. Powder blue, shiny chrome, classic. Like the roast beef grandma’s grandma used to slave over all day, equipped with the leather bar tape thats just like Yorkshire pudding on the side.

This “Limited” model comes out in runs of 100 only and will run you about $1080 cdn. Once their sold, another limited run comes out, maybe this time in brushed steel ( hint hint Thom).

Reverse Graffiti.

I was a graffiti artist in San Francisco for a good 5 years or so. I sucked, mind you. Since then Ive developed a taste in art, and design and try to enhance my skills, and learn, and evolve every day. I havent touched paint in years, and now seeing whats happening in San Francisco, Not many should either. The city’s canvas is already primed for you, all you have to do is choose the right medium.

San Francisco’s Broadway tunnel is a highly traveled thoroughfare in the heart of the city. Over 20,000 cars, trucks, and motorized vehicles pass through it per day. Its walls are caked with dirt and soot, and lined with patches of paint covered graffiti from days gone by. It set the perfect canvas to create a beautiful work of art showcasing the talents of reverse graffiti artist “Moose”, and the power of Green Works plant based cleaner.”
