Caplansky’s Delicatessen

Yesterday for lunch I ventured to Caplansky’s Delicatessen, located at 356 College St ( Just west of Kensington market). We walked up at 12pm on a Friday afternoon and I knew I’d like the spot as soon as I saw the beautiful classic blue sign and simple decor, plus the place was rammed, with a line up of people grumbling due to the fact that the most talked about smoked meat deli, was fresh out of smoked meat. We noticed the patio was free, and asked for a seat ( It was pretty cold outside, but not THAT cold).

We over heard the owner, Zane Caplansky say that in 2 weeks, they have been through 10,000 lbs of meat. WOW, Thats an awful lot, especially when it takes up to 2 weeks to cure and smoke it by hand, which they do.

We ordered the breakfast specials, which includes smoked beef bacon (yes, Its real, and yes its amazing), a few eggs, latkes and challah. Ill be honest, best breakfast I’ve had in Toronto. Now, the rave is about the smoked meat, and by the glimpse I got with my beef, im ready to eat. We ended up speaking to Zane, who was very humble and real and said he will not have any until around Oct 1st. Fine by me, im patient… I commented on the decor, which I was in love with, ( And Zane, its not a bad website either), he told me the interior architecture was done by a 70 yr old Architect ( but my memory is horrible and I cant remember his name). When I find out i’ll update…

Basically, go eat at Caplansky’s next week. Youll love it.

Classified – Anybody Listening

A Canadian Artist (Halifax) put out a video for his new single “Anybody Listening” recently. Take a look.

A few things really get to me about this video. For one, copyright infringement. He uses the extensive hard work of artists Shepard Fairey and Banksy and turns their strong political ideas and modern legendary works of art into garbage by adding a useless, pointless twist into it, which happens to be the rapper himself. I hope you get sued.

Also, Obama’s “HOPE” piece (By Fairey) with a picture of a white mediocre rapper from Halifax??? Really? I mean, yes everyone used that application where you can throw your pic into it and create meaningless facebook pictures, but adding it as a signifigant part of your music video? Please spare the public of your idiocy, and immediatley stop putting yourself beside one of history’s greatest moments.

I would strongly advise you pull that video, as this will get to Shep and Banksy.

Went out for a ride with on Sunday with friends, in a crazy water way near a golfcourse. Photos by Ted

First stop was this mini gap thingy. Theressa was a bit nervous about going in the water, but she overcame that fear quickly.

Trying to rock some under the bridge mid-fives and trying to show off…

The highlight was this dude Jeff, who happens to be immune to pain and embarrassment. Lets just say he fell, many times and rocks.

Nuit Blanche Toronto

My friends and I had a little walk through the Liberty Village portion of Nuit Blanche, it was pretty fantastic.

For those who dont know, once a year Toronto is converted into a HUGE gallery, displaying all kinds of art, and music installations. With over 1000 submissions scattered throughout the city and probably tens of tousands of people, its impossible to see the entire thing.

This Urban Junkyard looked awesome, with a waterfall coming from the window.

Yoko Ono’s Wish Tree was amazing as well. I couldn’t get photos of the tree, as it was too dark but I did get photos of the billboard hanging by crane above it. Thousands of people wrote on provided tags, wishing for peace, and tied the tags to the trees. I wrote on a tag for my wife and I which said:

” If our love can bring peace to this world, then I wish for our love”

The first photo of the billboard is using a flash to be able to capture the words, it was so bright I couldnt get it without popping it.

CALL FOR ENTRIES

Yanko Design is holding a design contest my wife will adore. Ive had an idea within this criteria for some time, and I think its about time I execute.

From Yanko:

Design for Poverty International Contest hosted by Yanko Design in collaboration with Blog Action Day. Participation is open to applicants from every country in the world; professionals, students, and design enthusiasts.

Subject matter

Global issues like poverty are extremely complex. There is no simple, clear answer. By asking thousands of different people to give their viewpoints and opinions, Blog Action Day creates an extraordinarily lens through which to view these issues.

Yanko Design wants you to put on your thinking caps and use design to address poverty; a solution or artistic social commentary. We want you to show how the power of design can bring unity and speak up for the hundreds of millions that can’t. We’ve seen wonderful examples of this in the past; portable water bottle filters and lightweight shelter modules to name a few. What can you come up with?

Design criteria

  • Entries must address poverty in terms of a solution OR artistic commentary.
  • Entries must be submitted by individuals or teams.
  • Projects should not already be in production.
  • Previously published or exhibited projects are prohibited.
  • Sketches, renderings, and descriptions are required.

Timelines

  • All submissions must be received by October 10, 2008.
  • 10 finalists will be announced to the world October, 15, 2008 on Blog Action Day.
  • The judges will announce the winners on October 20, 2008 here on Yanko Design.

Judging

Judging is private by select members of Yanko Design spanning many fields of design. Submissions will not be made public until the unveiling of the top 10 finalists. Gold, Silver, and Bronze awards will be given to the top three. Additional honorary awards will be given to select entries.

The judges will award designs and concepts which are innovative in terms of their formal / technological aspects addressing poverty. Both idea and presentation are key so no vague submissions please.

Prizes

There will be prizes thanks to our sponsors but will be kept secret until the winners are announced.

Copyright

By participating in the competition, all participants authorize Yanko Design and Blog Action Day to publish and exhibit all the designs including project data submitted – waiving compensation – at exhibitions and events and/or use them in any publication that the organizers may deem suitable. Yanko Design will not pursue production of any design submitted.

Eligibility

The competition is only open to humans, 18 years or older. Other than that, skies the limit.
