Yanko Design is holding a design contest my wife will adore. Ive had an idea within this criteria for some time, and I think its about time I execute.

From Yanko:

Design for Poverty International Contest hosted by Yanko Design in collaboration with Blog Action Day. Participation is open to applicants from every country in the world; professionals, students, and design enthusiasts.

Subject matter

Global issues like poverty are extremely complex. There is no simple, clear answer. By asking thousands of different people to give their viewpoints and opinions, Blog Action Day creates an extraordinarily lens through which to view these issues.

Yanko Design wants you to put on your thinking caps and use design to address poverty; a solution or artistic social commentary. We want you to show how the power of design can bring unity and speak up for the hundreds of millions that can’t. We’ve seen wonderful examples of this in the past; portable water bottle filters and lightweight shelter modules to name a few. What can you come up with?

Design criteria

  • Entries must address poverty in terms of a solution OR artistic commentary.
  • Entries must be submitted by individuals or teams.
  • Projects should not already be in production.
  • Previously published or exhibited projects are prohibited.
  • Sketches, renderings, and descriptions are required.

Timelines

  • All submissions must be received by October 10, 2008.
  • 10 finalists will be announced to the world October, 15, 2008 on Blog Action Day.
  • The judges will announce the winners on October 20, 2008 here on Yanko Design.

Judging

Judging is private by select members of Yanko Design spanning many fields of design. Submissions will not be made public until the unveiling of the top 10 finalists. Gold, Silver, and Bronze awards will be given to the top three. Additional honorary awards will be given to select entries.

The judges will award designs and concepts which are innovative in terms of their formal / technological aspects addressing poverty. Both idea and presentation are key so no vague submissions please.

Prizes

There will be prizes thanks to our sponsors but will be kept secret until the winners are announced.

Copyright

By participating in the competition, all participants authorize Yanko Design and Blog Action Day to publish and exhibit all the designs including project data submitted – waiving compensation – at exhibitions and events and/or use them in any publication that the organizers may deem suitable. Apparently some of Googles former engineers and programmers have developed the “David” for Googliath, and named it Cuil ( Pronounced COOL ) We’ll see if she holds up, for starters the layout of the searched items are pretty cuil.

1st vid. An audio clip of Ice T dissing Soulja Boy on a mixtape. Why he did it this way, not too sure but it doesnt set the best example.

2nd vid. A video response from soulja boy himself. ( And I agree with a lot of what he means) Times have changed, and you do what you need to in order to survive. Hell, I wish I could sell 800,000 records and make up a dance millions learned. Digital Underground did it too, Ice T.

3rd vid. Video response from Ice T apologizing, then rants some more. This vid doesnt make too much sense, to the point where he goes back and forth with more disses, and then praises etc. If he thought before adding this, it may have been different and we all know nothing will come from this except about 15 min of laughter…

JOY RIDE

Attended an art show last night named ” Joy Ride” at Studio Gallery with artists such as Phil Frost, Michel Gondry, Swoon, and many others. The show was inspired by the bicycle (especially track bike) culture. I’ll admit, the art was some what impressive, and I met some great people from SF and NY but the gallery space, and vibe was a bit off. For artists so mature, and established there should have been far deeper marketing initiatives, and thought into the curating, and overall execution of the show. Here are some photos of the event and my favorite pieces…

This skate deck piece baffled me a bit. My boy Hanni El Khatib designed these decks for DQM, but this artist placed them in a certain order and called them his own.

For the first time in life attending shows, the photographers far out did the fine artists.

This was sick, catching Twist in action. If it were an archival print, framed etc. I would have considered a purchase…

Phil Frost is an old school hero of mine from way back. Was doing textile characters long before the bape era.

Director Michel Gondry ( Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind) designed this crazy melting bike. Was trippy to stare at.

This just about sums up Track Bike culture.

This was probably my favorite piece in the show… Was just so simple.

Shoe Wheel

Ive been searching for shoe storage for myself and my wife ( who has an INSANE amount of shoes). I came across this shoe wheel by Rakku Designs.

Shoes are inserted into the pockets through elastic bands, which secure them snugly into place. The pockets are easily adjustable to fit a variety of shoes – sneakers, stilettos and flats. Just rotate the Shoe Wheel to make a selection.”

They say it can hold up to 30 pairs, but I see it more like 15 comfortably. Still, very cool and would work at the bottom of the closet.

If you dont have a ton of shoes, then maybe the half pod is more your flavor.
